The second is whether the visible problem can be measured in centimetres, because that is the kind a tailor solves. When the problem is the shoulder, the internal structure or fabric that has gone, an alteration will not improve it. The last question is the cost of the work against the value of the piece. Once the tailor's bill passes roughly a third of that value, the answer is usually release.

In Bangkok the routine jobs, taking in a waist, shortening a trouser or skirt hem, replacing a lining, still cost in the hundreds to low thousands of baht, well under what a replacement would run. They also work almost every time, because they change a proportion you can see. What is not worth paying for is rebuilding a jacket shoulder, resizing knitwear, or reviving a piece whose fabric has already gone. That budget does more on something cut correctly from the start.
