Chinos Guide

Chinos are lightweight, cotton-twill trousers originally designed for military use that have become the most versatile trouser in modern menswear. Available in slim, straight, and relaxed fits across a wide color range, chinos bridge the gap between formal trousers and jeans, working for everything from business casual offices to weekend outings.

Chinos Guide

Why It Matters

If a man could own only one type of trouser, chinos would be the answer. They work in more contexts than jeans (which cannot go formal) and more contexts than dress trousers (which cannot go casual). A well-chosen pair of chinos transitions from office to dinner to weekend with nothing more than a change of top and shoes.

In Bangkok's business environment, where heat makes wool trousers uncomfortable for much of the year, chinos are especially valuable. They breathe better, wrinkle less, and look equally appropriate in air-conditioned offices and outdoor restaurants.

The Essential Colors

  1. Navy — The most versatile. Works with virtually every top color and shoe.
  2. Stone / Sand — The classic "khaki" color. Best for warm weather and casual contexts.
  3. Gray — Bridges casual and professional. Pairs well with navy and white.
  4. Olive — Adds variety without being too bold. Works well in smart casual settings.

Chinos vs Khakis

The terms are often used interchangeably, but technically: "chinos" refers to the style of trouser (cotton twill, slant pockets, no crease); "khaki" refers specifically to the sandy-beige color. All khakis are chinos; not all chinos are khaki.

How to Style Chinos Across Formality

Business Casual

Navy or gray chinos + Oxford shirt + leather loafers or Derby shoes. Add a blazer for meetings. This is the standard business casual for men formula and it works reliably across most office environments.

Smart Casual

Olive or navy chinos + quality polo or knit + clean leather sneakers or desert boots. For smart casual events, chinos replace jeans when you want to be slightly more polished without reaching for trousers.

Weekend Casual

Stone or navy chinos + well-fitted tee + white sneakers. Roll the cuffs once or twice for a relaxed look. Even at the casual end, the fit still matters — baggy chinos look sloppy regardless of how relaxed the setting.

Common Mistakes

The most common mistake is buying chinos that are too long and letting them bunch at the ankle. Chinos should break cleanly at the shoe with no excess fabric pooling. A simple hem alteration fixes this instantly and costs very little.

A Stylist's Take

We put chinos in nearly every men's wardrobe we build — usually three pairs in different colors. They are the workhorse that makes everything else function. The key is getting the fit right from the start. We take clients to try multiple brands because cut varies enormously, and then we have the winning pair hemmed properly. Three great pairs of chinos, properly fitted, cover about 70% of a man's dressing needs.
