Styling Guide

A clean canvas — and what to add to it

If your shoulders, chest, waist, and hips line up at roughly the same width, you have a rectangle body shape. Some people call it "straight," "lean," or "slim athletic." It's a frame without strong taper, where clothes hang cleanly off the shoulders rather than sculpt around the torso. That's not a flaw to correct — it's the silhouette most designers actually design for.

The work, then, isn't camouflage — it's composition. A rectangle frame lets you decide where you want visual weight: across the shoulders for a more athletic read, at the chest for a relaxed-but-built look, or kept lean and elongated for a European silhouette. Once you stop matching someone else's proportions and choose your own, a rectangle becomes one of the easiest shapes to style well.

How to dress a rectangle body shape

The single most useful idea: add structure and texture where your frame doesn't add it for you. Layers, shoulder seams, and surface interest do the work that natural taper would do on other shapes.

Tops. Reach for fitted (not skin-tight) crewnecks, henleys, and Cuban-collar shirts that sit cleanly on the shoulder. Horizontal details — a chest pocket, a contrast yoke, a chambray panel — read as visual width. Textured knit polos (waffle, piqué, slub) add density without bulk. Save plain solid tees for under layers; on a rectangle, a textured or patterned top almost always looks better solo than a flat one.

Bottoms. Slim-straight or tapered trousers and chinos work best — they show the leg without clinging and balance a layered upper half. Mid- to high-rise sits cleaner than low-rise. Pleated trousers in a soft fabric add gentle hip volume that helps an upper layer read more substantial. Skip baggy or super-skinny extremes; both flatten the silhouette.

Layering and outerwear. This is where rectangles win. A structured blazer with light shoulder padding instantly broadens the upper half. An unstructured linen blazer over a tee gives the same effect with less heat. Field jackets, overshirts (chore coats, CPOs), and shawl-collar cardigans all add chest and shoulder mass. Keep one fitted layer underneath so the silhouette stays defined, not boxy.

Patterns and textures. Checked shirts, herringbone, cable knits, corduroy, brushed wool — surface interest reads as substance. An oxford with a discreet stripe photographs fuller than plain white.

Accessories. A watch with presence, a leather belt that closes the line between shirt and trouser, and well-chosen shoes (loafers, brogues, clean white sneakers) anchor the outfit. Skip oversized scarves and chunky jewellery — they fight the clean line a rectangle already has.

What to avoid (and why)

  • Boxy oversized tees in plain colours. They follow your existing line and erase any chest or shoulder cue. If you love the cut, choose a textured or printed version.
  • Drop-shoulder cuts on a narrow shoulder. They lower the visual shoulder line and make the upper half look even straighter.
  • Baggy or super-wide trousers with a fitted top. The mismatch reads as "borrowed clothes."
  • Skin-tight everything. Slim is good; painted-on is not — it exaggerates length and removes the structure layering provides.
  • Head-to-toe single colour without texture. Break monochrome with texture, layers, or a contrasting accessory.

None of this is forbidden. It's just more work for the same result.

Rectangle in Bangkok

Bangkok rewards layering — but only the right kind. Heavy wool blazers and stiff overcoats are out most of the year. Reach instead for unstructured linen, cotton-linen blends, and lightweight knit blazers that breathe. A short-sleeve camp-collar shirt over a fitted tee is a layered look the heat actually allows. For Sathorn or Sukhumvit offices, a cotton-blend blazer with a knit polo underneath gives you structure without sweating through your second meeting.

Tailoring matters more for rectangles than almost any other shape, because the silhouette is built from how cleanly clothes sit on the shoulder and waist. Bangkok has excellent tailors at every price point — basic alterations on a slim-fit shirt or chino can change how a piece reads on your frame entirely. If you've been buying off-the-rack and assuming "this is just how it looks on me," a tailor will change your mind in one visit.

Build a rectangle capsule wardrobe

Most rectangles already own perfectly good pieces — the issue is usually that nothing was bought with layering and texture in mind, so outfits read flat. A capsule built for your shape (six to eight tops in mixed textures, four to five layering pieces, a few well-cut trousers, and two structured jackets) means every outfit you put together has the visual interest your frame benefits from.

That's what we do in our Capsule Wardrobe Program. To start by confirming your shape, take five minutes with our body-shape calculator, or look at the full Style & Shop Journey.

Structure handles the shape question; colour handles the rest — find your personal color season before you commit to a navy or a charcoal.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have a rectangle body shape? +
Measure shoulders, chest, waist, and hips. If all four numbers are within 1-2 inches of each other, you're a rectangle. Visual cue: shirts hang straight on you without obvious tapering at the waist, and most slim-fit clothes feel correct without alteration.
How can a rectangle body shape look more built? +
Layering is your best friend. A blazer over a fitted T-shirt, a chambray shirt over a henley, a cardigan over a button-down — each layer adds visual mass to the chest and shoulders. Horizontal stripes on tops and structured shoulders also help.
What styles work best for rectangle body shapes? +
Slim-fit shirts, well-cut chinos and trousers, structured blazers, henleys with subtle shoulder seams, and shawl-collar cardigans. Patterns and textures (checked shirts, herringbone, knits) add interest where you'd otherwise look flat.
What should rectangle body shapes avoid? +
Boxy oversized cuts (especially in solid colors), drop-shoulder T-shirts that emphasize a narrow shoulder line, baggy pants that hide your legs, and vertical-stripe-everything which exaggerates your length without adding width.
Is rectangle common among Thai men? +
Rectangle is one of the most common shapes we see in our Bangkok studio, especially among lean men in their 20s and 30s, and tall men of all ages. It's the default 'lean Asian male' build — easy to dress once you know which silhouettes flatter you.
